International Women’s Day 2026 Celebrated in Maichew

MAICHEW, TIGRAY – The Women’s Association of Tigray (WAT), in partnership with UNICEF, hosted a vibrant celebration of International Women’s Day (March in Maichew, bringing together leaders and advocates to advance the rights of women and girls in the region.

Key Highlights of the Event

The ceremony featured keynote addresses from regional leaders, focusing on both the historical significance of the day and the practical steps needed for future progress.

Historical Reflection: Abeba Haileselassie, CEO of WAT, presented a detailed overview of the historical origins of March 8. She highlighted WAT’s ongoing initiatives and their specific achievements in championing women’s rights and socio-economic empowerment across Tigray.

A Call for Unity: Zinabu Gebremedhin, Zonal Administrator of Southern Tigray, officially welcomed attendees and issued a call to action. He urged all stakeholders-government, NGOs, and the community-to unite in a synchronized effort to realize the core goals of the women’s movement.

Government Commendation: Kiros Hagos, Head of the Tigray Bureau of Women’s Affairs, expressed her gratitude to both WAT and UNICEF for their collaboration in organizing the event, noting the importance of such platforms for advocacy and regional development.

Community Engagement

The celebration concluded with an interactive discussion among participants. The dialogue focused on the contemporary relevance of March 8 “causes” and evaluated the impact of WAT’s current movements on the ground.
