The Women’s Association of Tigray (WAT), in collaboration with the Network of Ethiopian Women’s Associations (NEWA), recently delivered a two-day peacebuilding training in Mekelle. A total of 51 participants drawn from the city’s seven sub-cities took part in the program.
The training was opened by Rigbe, Head of WAT Mekelle City, who outlined the objectives of the two-day session. She emphasized the importance of strengthening community-level peace initiatives and expressed appreciation for NEWA’s continued support in empowering women and promoting social cohesion.
Lead trainer Tesfay Taddesse presented key concepts and milestones essential for establishing sustainable peace within a community. His sessions highlighted the foundations of long-term peacebuilding, including inclusive participation, dialogue, trust-building, and community responsibility.
Participants engaged in group discussions, reflecting on the current realities within their own communities. Together with the trainers, they explored practical strategies and forecasted possible pathways to advance sustainable peace in the region.
The initiative underscores the commitment of WAT and NEWA to equipping local communities—particularly women—with the knowledge and tools needed to foster peace and rebuild social harmony.
